My name is Joshua Jenkins and this is debris; a collection of tiny snapshots into my life. I make websites in Portland. I like bicycles, coffee, cities, running, beer, and letters. I like other stuff too.

If you're feeling sassy you can ask me a question.

  1. Doing it ghetto fabulous. Probably just going to upload this drawing and pretend it’s a functional website.

  2. Oh hi, I’m working on something.

  3. Super interesting read about the ongoing BBC website design methodology. Unifying a giant site with hundreds of disperate sections across dozens of languages has got to be an overwhelming and extremely rewarding process.

  4. I’ve had this in the works for quite a while, mostly in concept, but lately in production. If you’re reading this right now, you’re reading Debris, which is my short-form, quick, public collection of whatever random thing I want you to see. The idea with articles is to just slow down for a minute, put some thought into what I want to say, and create an appropriate design for each article.
I’ll be writing about things that matter to me, obviously. I’m inspired by magazine layouts and good writing, and while I’m not necessarily equipped for either, the only way to improve is to practice, right? Right.

I hope you enjoy the ride a little bit. I have some cool plans. Ideally I’ll pump out another one every couple of weeks or so. Expect cool things.
COMING SOON!: Meta stuff! Comments (Probably!)! Navigation?! Publication Dates?! MORE ARTICLES!!

  5. I finally got around to making this site match my new portfolio website. Slowly whipping my online presence into something consistent.

Please let me know if you find any issues with any posts or weird behavior on this site. As usual I’ve decided to make things more complicated than they need to be and there’s a fair amount of magic happening with most types of posts, so I’m sure I’ve missed a thing or two.

I’ve also gone ahead and thrown in the new Tumblr feature to allow people to ask me questions which you can access by clicking the link in the text block near the top of the page. I’m still not sure I want to throw comments on here, but if you want to publicly interact (answered questions get posted) then by all means, make use.

I hope this new version is quite a bit more legible. Long blocks of text, like this one, are now split into two columns for easier reading. It might take some getting used to, but there are super helpful blue dots that indicate that it’s time to jump to the next column.

    That’s all, enjoy.

  6. So I get paid to make internets. This is my latest internet. It also just so happens that I work at this internet (in real life).

  8. LIFE has put a metric ass load of their back issues on the internets, this is amazing. So excited to start digging through this treasure chest.

I love this picture of the Space Needle being constructed.
